HIPSTER: a person who follows the latest trends and fashions, especially those regarded as being outside the cultural mainstream.  
HIP: following the latest trends and -STER: a suffix meaning a person who is engaged in certain activity or thing

The look of hipsters changes with each generation, but the intentions are pretty much the same.  On the "Hippies" page, we talked about how they were the hipsters of the 60s and 70s.  This page is dedicated to Modern Hipsters, who actually go by the name of "Hipster".  "Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in the 20's and 30's that value independant thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter". ~ Urban Dictionary
And, if you're going to do it right, you've got to have the look correct.
