The Transformed Automaton

(Steam Powered Giraffe)

San Diego’s Steam Powered Giraffe performs in character as century-old steam-driven automatons. Behind the white face paint and mime-like pantomime lies one of the most heartwarming and honest narratives of self-discovery in independent music.

The Lore:

In the band's fictional universe, the robot Rabbit was built in 1896. For years, Rabbit operated under a male persona. However, as the character "evolved," the robot underwent a complete physical upgrade, emerging with a redesigned, feminine copper-and-clockwork chassis.

The Reality:

In 2014, band co-founder Isabella "Bunny" Bennett publicly came out as a transgender woman. Rather than replacing her character or ignoring her real-world transition, the band wove Bunny’s lived experience directly into the band's canon. Rabbit’s mechanical "upgrade" mirrored Bunny’s real-life transition.

The Emotional Core:

Fans who grew up listening to songs like "Brass Goggles" and "Honeybee" watched both creator and character transition together in real-time. What started as theatrical sci-fi became a living symbol of self-acceptance, showing that even something made of cold iron and steam can change its shape to match its soul.
