The term "PINUP" became widely used during World War II when American soldiers would pin pictures, usually drawings and sometimes photos, of beautiful women to thier bunks or in thier aircraft.  The women were often in sexually flirty but not explicit positions such as slightly bent over or lying back with an arched back.
