HEADBANGERS are, what the world lovingly calls, those who listen to Heavy Metal Music. The path to Metaldom is all about abiding by the "code of authenticity" which entails: listening to and only listening to Heavy Metal music; not being a sellout; not being a poser; dissociating from mainstream, but welcoming of newcomers; and hostility toward authority.
During the 1980s it became important to define Heavy Metal music to keep it pure amongst the rise of Glam Rockers (Hair Metal). According to the code of authenticity: Heavy Metal consists of heavy, squealing guitars, high-pitched emotional voices, street clothes, and serious lyrics. Don't be fooled by poodle metal or lite metal.
THE LOOK: historically a male, dominated clique, many women also are into the scene today. Long hair (no hair products added); band t-shirt; black, leather jackets; spikes.
