The Beat Generation rather quickly developed from the literary works of a few writers in New York City and the vision of one man imparticular. 1948 - Jack Kerouac used the phrase to define what he and his close friends were doing (underground, anti conformists). 1950 - John Clellon Holmes published a book, Go, describing Jack Kerouac's group. He also published a manifesto in the New York Times magazine. 1954 - Nolan Miller published a book called Why I Am So Beat. This solidified the clique as a genuine subculture. Jack Kerouac then continued to fuel the movement with his own literary works of On The Road (1957) and The Dharma Bums (1958).
