This can be done from a broad viewpoint - looking at the future as a whole - for example through the literary means of Sci-Fi where the creator would think about everything from what people could wear to what people could be doing in the future. Or through art work - the Italian Futurism movement explored futuristic architecture, 3D art, embraced industrialism. Or it can be done with focus on one specific industry, one specific technology, or one particular science (effects on the environment).
The occupation of becoming a futurist is now being taught in Universities and many people are making a living by being FUTURISTS. Corporations hire consumer trends speculators, political shift analyzers, technological advancement consultants...
