Ravers dress however they would like. The idea is to be comfortable in an outfit that will allow you to be able to move and get sweaty. Don't feel obligated to dress in a manner that you think will help you fit in - only posers imitate. In fact, this is a great environment to try something outlandish. Many raves these days have black lights so playing with neon is fun. Hella Cliques likes to play with black light body paint: on the eyelashes and the lips looks really cool.
Raves started at warehouse parties in the UK - back in the day, Hella Cliques either attended raves at empty warehouses or in sand bowls (huge bowls formed by huge sand dunes). Raves used to be illegal and underground - due to the known drug usage. We danced to House, Breakbeat, AcidHouse, or Techno. These days the movement has come out to the open with huge venues playing a genre of music that is all encompassing of the electronica sound which a lot of people call EDM.
